Pepstatin A (Isovalenyl-L-val-L-val-statinyl-L-ala-statin) wird aus Streptomyces testaceus isoliert. Es ist ein potenter Inhibitor von sauren Proteasen (aspartic proteases), inklusive Pepsin, Renin und Cathepsin D und vielen mikrobieller saurer Proteasen. Pepstatin ist wenig toxisch. Die effektive Konzentration liegt bei 1 µM. Pepstatin A ist für ca. 1 Tag bis 1 Woche bei 4°C stabil. Konzentrierte Lösungen (1 mM) sind für mehrere Monate bei -20°C stabil.
