Ursprünglich entwickelt für die Kultivierung von murinen Embryozellen, ist DMEM wie geschaffen für ein breites Spektrum von Zellen, besonders wenn das Medium mit FCS supplementiert wird. DMEM ist ein Eagle Medium mit einem vierfachen Gehalt an Aminosäuren und Vitaminen. DMEM mit 1,0g/L Glukose ist die Standardrezeptur, während DMEM mit 4,5g/L Glukose für Zellen mit hohem Energiebedarf entwickelt wurde.
